A little history

I have always been around music. My father is a musician and played in bands all over Japan and eventually in the Bay Area. I remember watching him rehearse with his band mates in our garage and always being so intrigued by the synergy of all the musicians, and excited about the music they made. He taught me at an early age the basics of percussion such as: the egg shaker, tambourine, wood block, cabasa, claves, cowbell, maracas, and even a drum kit. I grew up listening to artists like Earth, Wind and Fire, Tower of Power, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and my all time favorite, Stevie Wonder. I knew from an early age that music was going to be a huge part of my life.

Throughout my teens and early adult life, I sang in choirs and in various groups and churches, as well as solo performances and studio work. Although I was active vocally, it was never a career but just something I enjoyed doing. In 2013 I was asked to be the lead singer and co-manager of a new Motown music project called Sugar. I was thrilled! It was going to be the first paying gig I’ve ever been in, I was going to sing often, and it was music I truly enjoyed singing. After a few years, I strongly felt that Sugar needed to grow. Motown isn’t an era that is often requested, so some of the band mates and I decided to take Sugar in a new direction to get us in front of more people, giving them more variety. This is when I had the idea to start a business that would be a hub, where I could choose musicians I wanted to work with, based on the type of music the clients wanted to hear. Sugar Laine Productions was born. It took some time to solidify my vision but after a year of connecting with other musicians and a lot of personal growth and development, I am confident when I say that Sugar Laine Productions found its purpose.
